New ideas for cell phone sensors
A N.Y. Times article refers to Benedetto Vigna, the general manager of the Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) division of STMicroelectronics, regarding new sensors that might be built into cell phones soon.
Ideas:
- Altimeters detecting elevation: “These sensors will tell people what floor they are on in a building, or could be used to more precisely determine where you are in relation to your friends on a location-based service,” says Vigna.
- Heart monitors
- Perspiration detection: to monitor excitement level and mood.
- More microphones
- Temperature sensors
- Humidity sensors
Two applications mentioned in the article are
- Games that react to one’s mood and excitement
- Increasing security by identifying a user via the sensor data. This could also make banking safer.
