Israelis and Iranians use Facebook to declare their solidarity

The article “Israeli-Iranian solidarity exchange sweeps Facebook” (by Dimi Reider for +972 Magazine) reports on a touching campaign on Facebook:
On Saturday night, an Israeli couple – two graphic designers named Ronnie Edri and Michal Tamir – decided to cut across the growing anxiety and fear over the possibility of an Israel-Iran war, and address Iranian citizens directly. They created a slogan you can impose over your profile picture or any picture of your choice.
The Iranian answers were initially cynical (TOS Spock and TNG Worf – huh?), but then grew earnest. Things of note:
- The two people use English to communicate. Which also allows the world to observe.
- Citizens generally don’t want war, it’s often governments that perpetrate it, after having forced themselves into a position with limited options.
- Facebook is so popular now that it has become an effective means of communication for two nations that are very isolated from each other. This is historically unique and yet another example of the internet helping to undermine centralized authority.
